Portfolio Positioning as of 12/31/2019

  • The portfolio remains overweight in the consumer staples sector but less so than in the previous quarter.  While we continue to believe that the companies we own in this sector are fundamentally strong, they have performed well, thus we have been taking profits within the sector.
  • The portfolio’s largest underweight is in the industrials sector, where we continue to hold a defensive position. In our view, the amount of capacity added in industrials through the previous market cycle is not being fully absorbed and we are not seeing notable demand drivers.
  • Within the real estate sector, we are shifting from development-oriented companies to income-producing companies. We are re-orienting from higher risk developers to clear growth opportunities within logistics companies, especially as we see their pricing power emerge.
  • While we are long-term believers in Emerging Markets opportunities, we remain near the portfolio’s historic lows in exposure to Emerging Markets. Our goal is to identify unique assets that we can purchase in Emerging Markets that we cannot obtain elsewhere.
  • Key identifiable risks include an escalation in the ongoing U.S.-China trade disputes, a prolonged Brexit process which increases economic uncertainty, and a negative global growth surprise.
